Inside Look Ep. 12 : BasedTJ

Texas Vs. The World!

BasedTJ is a name you should know by now if you don’t already. The emerging producer from Dallas, Texas, has established himself as a powerhouse in the last few years. You might know him from his famous beat with 6Silky that’ll go down as legendary in the Soundcloud community. The beat eventually made its way to Playboi Carti for the song “Telly/We So Proud of Him.” BasedTJ has also produced some of the biggest songs for Atlanta rapper Sahbabii. The producer is known for his unique emotional, melodic R&B trap-infused beats. TJ has carved his own lane, and he’s zooming through it right now. You might know BasedTJ for his production, but the producer is also an artist that slides on his own beats. He’s someone you can’t box in. The creative has shown us over the years that he can do it all. I recently spoke with TJ about his name origin, history as a producer, his sound, connection with Sahbabii, his rapping as well as his goals. Check it out below!

Chandy: Tell us a bit about yourself. Name, where you’re from, how old you are and who you are.

BasedTJ: I’m BasedTJ, an artist from Dallas, Texas, and I’m 19 years old.

Chandy: How’d you come up with your name “BasedTJ” ?

BasedTJ: My name came about around 2015. I was already producing, but my name was TJ on the beat. A producer that first reached out to me when I was 13 named MoneyCobb originally went by BasedCobb. When he changed his name, I snatched “based” and put it in front of my name instead. But I still use my “TJ on the beat” tag just cause it’s my first tag.

Chandy: Why’d you start producing? Was it something you were always interested in growing up?

BasedTJ: Music runs in my family, so I’ve been producing since literally a baby. My dad would have me around all his music equipment, and I knew how to program it before I could even speak words. I think I made my first beat on FL Studio in 2005 or something like that. I still got my first beats.

Chandy: What’s your creative process like? What inspires you?

BasedTJ: My creative process is really simple. I can’t make beats on an empty stomach, so I always eat a bunch of shit then make a beat. I always make my best shit on a full stomach. Music that’s been inspiring me lately is Three 6 Mafia, UGK, and a LOT of Bone Thugs. But I’ve been fucking with Working on Dying, Richie Souf, and Drum Drummie, who be producing YoungBoy’s shit.

Chandy: Your sound as a producer is unique as hell. How would you describe it?

BasedTJ: I can’t necessarily describe my sound and make sense. It’s like some sonic smooth shit, but I still got my Texas roots in it. I be thinking my shit sound a little too weird, though.

Chandy: When did you realize music is something you wanted to pursue full time and something you can make a living off of?

BasedTJ: I realized music could be my full-time job around two years ago. Hella Sketchy (may he rest in peace) reached out to me and brought me out to LA after I graduated. That led to me signing with my manager Rico Brooks. After seeing how much I’ve accomplished all before age 20, I realized how much I could do and took it seriously.

Chandy: How’d you connect with SahBabii ?

BasedTJ: Sah found me just fishing for beats on SoundCloud and YouTube. Just got lucky I guess. He’s a genuine dude, though. We chopped it up in person and made like 10 songs in one session.

Chandy: Last year you dropped an EP as a rapper! Is rapping something you’re looking to pursue or you just do for fun?

BasedTJ: Rapping is something I definitely wanna do more consistently. I feel like I sound the best on my beats anyways. But right now, I’m focusing on being a producer.

Chandy: What’re your long term goals as a producer and artist?

BasedTJ: My long term goals are to eventually be on the same scale as Metro & Zaytoven basically.

Chandy: What’s something you want your fans to know about you that they can’t get from your music?

BasedTJ: Something that y’all probably don’t know is that I’m really a cool ass mf. I feel like people be intimidated to interact with me since I don’t really have a social presence like that.
